Buttermere and Crummock Water are set in an amphitheatre of mountains, made more dramatic by the play of light and shade in the narrow valley. Further down the valley, nestled in the wooded Vale of Lorton, you will find Loweswater. A peaceful lake, often bypassed, it is surrounded by rolling hills in contrast to the rocky mountains. Each has lakeside paths that go right round providing ample photographic views. All three are not far from Cockermouth and are also easily reached from elsewhere in West Cumbria.
