Holidays to the South Downs National Park
England’s newest national park is one of the most important chalk landscapes in England. Lines of rolling chalk hills (or downland) run parallel to the South-East coast, through Hampshire, West Sussex and East Sussex. Landscapes of open heath, close-cropped grasslands, and ancient woodland are edged by a dramatic coastline with towering chalk cliffs, such as Seven Sisters and Beachy Head, that delight fossil hunters seeking remains of creatures that inhabited an ancient ocean 100 million years ago.
Neolithic flint mines, burial mounds and hillforts evidence early human inhabitation in this area much influenced by millennia of human activity.
