Experience Iceland as you circumnavigate the country from the iconic two-lane highway known as Route 1. Completed in 1974 to mark 1,100 years of settlement, the road was, and still is, a popular summer holiday for many Icelandic families travelling along its 1,399km course. Today, however, the route has become increasingly popular with foreign visitors looking to experience the varied natural wonders, friendly people and historic sites scattered around the island. This 8-day self-drive itinerary incorporates the historical heartland of Iceland - Reykjavik, Thingvellir and Reykholt, the wild southern and eastern coastline framed by the brooding peaks of Mount Hekla and the Vatnajokull glacier - and continues to the stunning Lake Myvatn and northern capital of Akureyri before finishing in vibrant Reykjavik.

Amazing Scenery and Wildlife

We saw loads of animals, bison, black and grizzly bear, elk, deer and even wolves in the distance. Waterfalls and lakes were magnificent and the trails that we walked were all so beautiful and well worth visiting.

Humbled by our surroundings

Utah was my favourite part. There was so much to do and it was like nothing I’ve seen before. Really liked Capitol Reef as it was much quieter and we were so close to it. Will always remember going star gazing, brilliant.

A bite out of the Big Apple

Amazing New York highlights were a Broadway show, Central Park, Empire State building and Time Square. We visited MoMA which was amazing to see all best artwork in the world, we were just not expecting it, every room we went into there was another masterpiece. Our hotel was under a mile from the subway station and we saw how the New Yorkers live and commute.
